Countdown to London 2012

One Giant Leap Year Towards London 2012

In July 2005 London made us all incredibly proud by winning the bid to host the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games in 2012. Over the last 6 years one man has relentlessly driven the Olympic campaign forward and made his dream, and vision, of London 2012 a reality.

Sebastian Coe won four Olympic medals during his athletics career, including gold in the 1500 metres in Moscow in 1980 and again at Los Angeles in 1984 (the only man to win consecutive golds at this distance.) He has set 8 outdoor and 3 indoor world records. There really isn’t much that holds this man back. His battles on the track with Steve Cram and Steve Ovett lead to some of athletics best and most nail biting races of the 80’s!

Now Chair of The London 2012 Organising Committee, Lord Coe is delivering exactly what he promised 6 years ago… and with one year (or 366 days) to go we are witnessing the transformation of London’s East End into a sporting oasis.

To mark the one year countdown to London 2012 Thomson Reuters held a Newsmaker event, with Sebastian Coe and Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and the Olympics, interviewed by Reuters Global Sports Editor Paul Radford.

Our role in the event was to help Reuters, the world’s largest news agency promote their unrivalled coverage of the upcoming Olympics to both their clients and global journalists who attended the event.

The brief from our client was to create a great piece of collateral for the event that people would hold on to – that was as exciting and as memorable as the evening itself. We wanted to create a beautiful and informative piece of marketing that attendees would want to keep to mark the dawn of the greatest sporting event Great Britain has ever seen.

“I want people to leave London, to leave this country, thinking they have seen it at its best” Sebastian Coe

A pocket size concertina brochure fitted neatly inside a VIP wallet, complete with Reuters branded lanyards creating the idea of an ‘Access All Areas’ pass. They were a great success on the night with Seb commenting on their great design!

And to ensure this was a piece to treasure we found a way to make them totally ‘unthrow-awayable’…

A signature from Lord Coe gave each brochure an official seal of approval and meant that not one of these brochures was left behind after the event!
